Portland Voters Approve FY09 School Budget

A first-ever referendum on the Portland Public Schools budget won voter approval on May 13 by a margin of nearly two to one.  The vote total was 2,311 in favor (65%) of the fiscal year 2009 budget and 1,229 opposed (35 %).  The referendum was required by a new state law.

The Portland City Council unanimously approved the $89.5 million school budget. The budget trims staff, replenishes funds from last year’s deficit and ensures the district’s financial stability.
