Portland voters on Nov. 7 re-elected District 5 Representative Marnie S. Morrione to a fourth term on the Portland Board of Public Education. Two newcomers to the board also were elected.

Morrione was one of three candidates running unopposed for three school board seats. Morrione, who has a background in conference development and project management, previously served as school board chair and is chair of the board’s Curriculum and Educational Planning Committee.

Two newscomers also won seats.

Timothy D. Atkinson, a software engineer, won the District 4 seat. That seat was vacated by Stephanie Hatzenbuehler in September, just two months before her term ended, because she and her family moved out of the state.

Mark V. Balfantz, an attorney, won an at-large school board seat being vacated by Jon Eder, who did not seek re-election.

The new members will be inaugurated in December. School board members’ terms run for three years.
