Maine’s Read to ME Challenge 2017 begins Thursday, Feb. 2, and runs through March 2, and Portland Public Schools' families are encouraged to take the Challenge!

This simple but powerful campaign, sponsored by the Maine Department of Education, challenges adults to read to children for 15 minutes, to capture that reading episode via a photo or video and then post it on social media to challenge others to do the same.

Reading aloud to children is one of the most cost effective and highly beneficial methods of building children’s literate abilities. Portland’s public schools are participating in the Challenge and encourage families to also join in.

Here’s how to participate:

1) Read to and/or have a child/children read to you for at least 15 minutes. You can read an engaging book, chapter of a novel, newspaper or magazine article, comics, nursery rhymes or poetry.

2) Capture a photograph of short video (15-30 seconds) of yourself reading to/with the child.

3) Post the photo or video on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with #ReadtoME or #ReadaloudME.

4) Tag your friends in the post to take the Challenge too!

You can also see an informational flier in a variety of other languages spoken by families in the district: Acholi, ArabicFrench, Khmer, PortugueseSomali, Spanish and Vietnamese.
