On Friday, Sept. 15, engineering classes at Portland High School will have the opportunity to speak to professionals in the fields of civil, structural, nuclear, mechanical, environmental and computer engineering in the fifth annual “Ask an Engineer Day” at PHS. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the library of the school, located at 284 Cumberland Avenue.

The engineers will talk about their work on vital projects ranging from infrastructure to computers, potentially inspiring PHS students to become engineers.

“Students love this event. They learn a lot about various fields of engineering in a way that will stick, and it gives relevance to the class and school as a whole,” said Rosalee Lamm, PHS physics and engineering teacher.

“Ask an Engineer Day” was developed and organized by PHS’ Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Committee. The PLTW committee is made up of professionals from PHS; JMG (Jobs for Maine’s Graduates); the University of Southern Maine; the Louis Berger Group; Colby Company Engineering; IDEXX; Casco Bay Engineering; IDE; and community members.

The community connections and professional resources provided by PLTW committee members bring valuable relevance and depth to the engineering students at PHS.

Portland High School is a certified Project Lead The Way (PLTW) school. PLTW is the nation’s leading provider of STEM programs for K-12 curricula. The program applies engineering, science, math and technology to solve complex problems in a real-world context.
