Getting Meal Benefits

The food services offered in all the public schools in Portland are among the best in the country. Students are offered nutritionally balanced lunches and breakfasts that incorporate the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

All meals served must meet patterns established by the United States Department of Agriculture. If a child has been determined by a doctor to be disabled and the disability prevents the child from eating the regular school meals, schools will make any substitutions PRESCRIBED by the doctor. If a substitution is prescribed, there will be no extra charge for the meal. If your child needs substitutions because of a disability, please get in touch with your child’s school for further information.

If you now get food stamps or Maine Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) for your child, that child can get free meals. If your total household income is the same or less than the amounts on the income chart, your child can get free meals. A foster child who is the legal responsibility of the courts may get free meals regardless of your income.

To get free or reduced price meals for your child you must complete an application and return it to the Food Service Office, 28 Homestead Avenue, Portland, Me. 04103. We cannot approve an application that is not complete.

For an application as well as further instructions to help you apply, please contact your child’s school or the Food Service Department at 874-8231.
