On May 20, students in Casco Bay High School's Civil Rights Team and Student Cabinet – as well as their faculty advisors – were honored with a Maine Education Association Human and Civil Rights Award for their leadership of the Walk of Solidarity in January, which was a response to a hate crime at a bus stop near the school.

Every day, students at East End Community School in Portland get their minds working and their bodies moving before school even starts, as they participate in the school’s Rise and Shine program. On Thursday, May 24, Gov. Paul LePage visited the school to get a firsthand look at the program, which is designed to combat absenteeism by getting students excited about coming to school.

Deering High School senior Patrick Uwamahoro’s wheelchair doesn’t stop him from playing the game he loves: basketball. What does hold him back are lack of opportunities to play wheelchair basketball – a game in which wheelchair athletes do everything traditional basketball players do, such as dribble, pass, shoot the ball and even do lay-ups. There isn’t a local league in which Patrick can play.
