King Middle School will be hosting its 23rd annual Celebration of Learning on Thursday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the school, located at 92 Deering Avenue. The event is free and open to the public.

King is a high-achieving and innovative EL Education Mentor school. As one of the most racially, culturally, and economically diverse public schools in Maine, King includes all students in authentic work and expects everyone to succeed.

As students at an EL Education Mentor School, King’s sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders delve into meaningful and authentic interdisciplinary units, called expeditions, and produce high quality products to demonstrate their understanding. Some highlights from this year include students working with the Maine Center for Disease Control & Prevention and the Muskie School of Public Health to develop middle school curriculum focused on tick- and mosquito-borne illnesses; designing shoes based on the tenets of biomimicry; and collaborating with local neighborhood associations to develop comprehensive plans for the city.

Students will be discussing these products at the Celebration Of Learning. The public is welcome to visit King to view these products and to engage with students about their learning.

The Celebration of Learning is a component of King’s annual Site Seminar. On May 4 and May 5, students and staff will be hosting visitors from across the country to highlight their expeditionary units, key school design features, and student success. For more information on attending the Site Seminar, please contact the school at (207) 874-8140 or visit: king.portlandschools.org/about_us/visiting_king

EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) is a leading K-12 nonprofit that is redefining student achievement in diverse communities across the country. EL Education was created more than 20 years ago through the collaboration of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound. EL Education’s research-based approach challenges and empowers teachers and students. Its success is informed by decades of learning with its national network of over 150 high-achieving public schools.

King Middle School was named an EL Education Mentor School last year. That is an honor given to high-performing EL Education schools that have not only reached the organization's high standards for quality, but also have demonstrated a readiness and willingness to share their expertise with new network schools.

The Portland Public Schools’ Casco Bay High School also is a Mentor School within the EL Education network.
