Avalinda Lindsay, head custodian at Hall Elementary School, was recently honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for her dedication and service – which has been outstanding despite challenges because a new Hall School is under construction.

The recognition took place at the board’s Aug. 15 meeting.

Botana said that those who know Avalinda “know that she has always gone above and beyond to support all of the needs of Hall School. This year she has been enormously challenged by flying solo at Hall for the summer with 12 classrooms to move due to construction. In addition to this, she has cleaned the building magnificently with no water, except that which was trucked in on a weekly basis from friends with back yard hoses.”

Hall Principal Dawn Kenniston described Avalinda as “the heart and soul of our school, who plays a major role in all aspects of school life. Her work ethic serves as a model for students, staff and families.”

Botana said, “She is a wonderful example of the amazing people in the Portland Public Schools. Thank you, Avalinda!"

Avalinda has lived in this country for 30 years, having settled here from Jamaica. She has five sons and 16 grandchildren, with whom she spends all of her free time.
