King Middle School eighth-graders will culminate their Energy Solution Project expedition on Tuesday, June 13, at the Abromson Center at the University of Southern Maine at 10:30 am.  Students will share their wind turbine designs and show stop-motion videos about sustainable energy sources.

This culminating event is open to the public.

The Energy Solutions Project focused on the following guiding questions:  What energy sources are most sustainable?  What combination of energy sources should Maine utilize to become carbon neutral by 2040?

During this expedition, students toured ecomaine as well as the USM’s sustainability initiatives. They also tested their offshore wind turbine models at the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composite Lab in Orono.

Students researched energy sources, debating the strengths and shortcoming of each. They then turned their focus to what combination of energy sources Maine should utilize to become carbon neutral by 2040.  The final product of this research is a stop-motion video proposal that focuses on how Maine can best become carbon neutral by 2040.  Students will combine their research, their persuasive techniques, their understanding of dependent and independent variables to develop a better understanding of our complex energy predicament and its solutions.
