The Portland Board of Public Education has approved the appointment of Ann Hanna as principal of Riverton Elementary School and of Scott Keysor as assistant principal of Lincoln Middle School, effective July 1.

The personnel vote took place at the school board's June 6 meeting.

Hanna, who is Maine’s Elementary School Assistant Principal of the Year for 2017, currently is assistant principal at Ocean Avenue Elementary School. She will replace Riverton Principal Jeanne Malia, who is retiring at the end of June after being an exemplary leader of that school for six years.

Superintendent Xavier Botana called Hanna “a tremendous leader.”

“Ann’s experience and leadership abilities, as well as the caring way she listens to and supports students, make her the best choice to lead Riverton,” Botana said. He noted that the Maine Principals’ Association honored her with the title of Maine Elementary School Assistant Principal of the Year “because of her commitment to excellence, her strong desire to meet the academic and social needs of all students and her outstanding leadership.”

Hanna has been working for the Portland Public Schools since 1990. Prior to taking on the assistant principal post at Ocean Avenue in 2011, Hanna was an elementary classroom teacher, a reading teacher, a literacy specialist, a teacher leader, and data literacy specialist for various schools, including Adams, Jack, East End, and Ocean Avenue elementary schools. Hanna received her bachelor of arts in romance languages from the University of Maine, Orono, and McGill University in Montreal. She earned a masters of science in literacy education from the University of Southern Maine, and also holds a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership from USM.

Hanna succeeds Principal Malia. “We are most grateful to Jeanne for her leadership, dedication and service to Riverton students, staff and families,” Botana said. “Jeanne has fostered a school culture at Riverton that supports staff and their commitment to the success of students. Under her tenure, the school has made great gains on many fronts, including student performance, parents involvement and program offerings.”

Scott Keysor has been a special education teacher at South Portland High School for the past 11 years. Prior to that he was a special education teacher in the Gray-New Gloucester Schools and the Buckfield-Hartford-Sumner Schools. He holds a master’s degree in special education and a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Southern Maine.

“We are extremely grateful and happy that Scott has joined the Portland Public Schools and we look forward to working with him in years to come,” Botana said.

Keysor replaces Lincoln Middle School Assistant Principal Bethany Connolly, who is leaving to become principal of Skillin Elementary School in South Portland. “We wish Bethany the best and thank her for her dedication and service – she will always be a part of the Portland Public Schools family,” Botana said.
