The Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana recently honored Patricia Sprague, IB Coordinator at Ocean Avenue Elementary School, with a Portland Public Schools’ Essence Award.

The award was presented to Sprague at the board’s April 25 meeting. The PPS Essence Award recognizes an individual who embodies the good work that is happening in district schools.

Here is a summary of Botana’s remarks on why Sprague is so deserving of the award:

“In 2016, Ocean Avenue Elementary School was named as an authorized International Baccalaureate World School, Primary Years Programme. Ocean Avenue is now the only elementary school in Maine to attain such a distinction, and one of just a few in New England. Patty Sprague, who coordinates the IB Primary Years Program throughout the school, was one of the key staff members who helped Ocean Avenue achieve that status.

Patty has been with the district and Ocean Avenue since 2013. She leads a number of IB initiatives. This year, that has involved training new teachers, supporting the launch of the capstone exhibition project for fifth-graders, locking down Ocean Avenue’s Program of Inquiry, and starting the school’s IB institute this summer.

Patty makes a difference by supporting teachers who are able to lift the IB learner model so all students can learn through shared language and develop individual learning skills. Patty also co-teaches in classrooms to further solidify the inquiry driven, concept-based approach for our students, which helps students think deeply and be able to express their thinking.

Patty reflects the values and mission of our district and Ocean Avenue School by supporting everyone where they are at, and being truly reflective, knowledgeable, and open-minded. She is helping everyone at Ocean Avenue grow to the next level with the IB model, which focuses on helping prepare students for life in a globalized world.”

Botana concluded, “Congratulations, Patty, on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for all that you do for staff and students!”
