Public Hearing on Elementary School Facilities Set for Jan. 19
The City Council’s School Facilities Ad Hoc Committee will host a public hearing on Thursday, Jan. 19, regarding a plan to pay for proposed renovations at Presumpscot, Longfellow, Lyseth, and Reiche elementary schools. The public hearing will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall and free childcare will be available.
The committee has spent six months reviewing the need for the renovations and a bond proposal to pay for them. At the culmination of the public hearing, the committee plans to take action on a $60.9 million bond proposal made by the co-chairs of the committee, as well as any other proposals that may be presented for consideration.
The committee’s members include Portland Board of Public Education Chair Anna Trevorrow and board members Marnie Morrione, Stephanie Hatzenbuehler, and Sarah Thompson. Also on the committee are Mayor Ethan Strimling and city councilors Nick Mavodones, David Brenerman and Justin Costa. Strimling and Morrione serve as co-chairs of the committee.
Students from the Portland Arts & Technology High School (PATHS) who are learning about early-childhood education will be on hand to offer supervised child care services in Room 24 of City Hall for any parents who wish to attend the meeting. A snack will also be provided.
