Lauren Cormier, an eighth-grade social studies teacher at Lyman Moore Middle School, was honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana for her outstanding teaching. The recognition took place at the board’s May 16 meeting.

Here’s a summary of Botana’s remarks concerning Cormier:

“Lauren Cormier was recently awarded the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award. She was selected for that “Teacher of the Year” honor by both the VFW Deering Memorial Post and District 10.

Lauren, who has taught at Lyman Moore for 34 years, was selected for her commitment to teaching students about U.S. history and the importance of civic responsibility and service. She is donating the $200 she won to help her students attend the school’s annual trip to the Freedom Trail in Boston, which she organizes each year to help make history come alive to students.

Lyman Moore Assistant Principal Jake Geissman says that, in these politically polarized times, Lauren guides students toward the common ideals that all Americans can share: pride in tradition, service to community, and commitment to make a strong future. When students take her class, they learn American values that everybody would recognize as noble and high. Thank you, Lauren Cormier, for your dedication and service and for the wonderful civics lessons you provide our students!”
