The mayoral forum that Deering High School students held on Oct. 29 was the last debate for the three mayoral candidates before Election Day, Tuesday Nov. 3. First-Graders Get Strong Reading Start with Pilot Program at Ocean Avenue

Ocean Avenue Elementary School has been selected as a site for a new pilot program sponsored by Starting Strong to boost first-grade reading. The program, which is called “Reading Partners,” pairs trained volunteers from the community with first-grade students who need extra support to reach grade-level reading proficiency. More than 30 volunteers have been matched with 16 students so that each of the students reads with a volunteer twice a week.  more

Portland High School students in teacher Sally Reagan’s Global Studies classes went on a field trip recently to learn about a Pakistani schoolgirl who has made headlines fighting for the right of girls to have an education. The students also are running a clothing drive until Nov. 20 to raise funds for girls’ education.  more
