The district’s “Summer in the City” summer school staff members were recently honored by the Portland Board of Public Education and Superintendent Xavier Botana.

The recognition took place at the Board’s Sept. 24 meeting.

“We know that for some students, summer can be a time of decreased learning,” Botana said. “The Portland Public Schools works with partners from across the city to ensure that we had great summer learning options for our students. So whether it was our Step Up to Kindergarten, our Middle School Math Camp, our English Language Learners academy or any of the many partner summer programs, I would like to recognize the many Portland Public Schools staff that made this possible.”

Botana noted that, at a previous meeting, he and the Board recognized the district’s Enrollment and Intake team for the work that they did to support students who arrived as asylum seekers in Portland early in June. With the aid of interpreters as needed, the Enrollment and Intake team helped families register their children for school, conducted an assessment of each child’s English-language skills and talked to the families about each child’s educational history, physical and cognitive development, and health and vaccination records.

“Tonight,” Botana continued, “I also want to recognize many of the folks who worked in our summer school for rallying to expand summer learning opportunities to support the school-aged children at the Expo.”

Honored at the meeting were: Molly Myers, District Summer Programs Coordinator; Carol Ridlon; Summer in the City Site Coordinator; and Summer in the City staff: Marci Ann Buschner, Caroline Clavel, Anna DeCastro, Gwen Gilman, Jack Koni, Caitrin Monahan, Monique Mutumwinka, Fernando Olimpio, Bakhita Saabino, Dorothy Thompson and Sarah Norsworthy. Also honored were Lori Bobinsky and Renee Serio, Reiche Summer Program Coordinators; and Reiche Rising K Staff: Fatuma Ali, Jennifer Seed and Christine Wirth. Others honored included Carlos Gomez, Middle and High School Language Academy Coordinator; and MS/HS Language Academy staff: Margaret Callahan, Pamela Otunnu, Joel Peck, Jessica Sturgs, Rachel Watson and MaryEllen Watson. Also honored were Maureen Clancy, Language Access Coordinator; Barbara Stoddard, Executive Director of HR and Teach Portland Interns; Eric Wood, Director of Transportation; Robyn Wells, Transportation Logistics Coordinator; Sydney Williams, ELO Coordinator; and foster grandparents Fran Seeley and Margaret Genest.

“Each of them and the entire Portland summer learning staff deserve our gratitude for helping over 1,000 Portland Public Schools students, including our new arrivals, to learn and grow,” Botana said.

He added, “Supporting out-of-school learning is a critical need for the district. In the coming months, Assistant Superintendent Melea Nalli and her team will be sharing highlights of this past summer’s work and previewing our future direction.”
