Cindy Soule, 2021 Maine Teacher of the Year and a fourth-grade teacher at Talbot Community School, will be honored at Educate Maine’s 24th Annual Education Leadership Awards on Friday, Dec. 10. The virtual award ceremony will begin at 12:45 p.m. at the 2021 Annual Education Symposium.

The Symposium highlights best practices in education and workforce development from early childhood through adulthood. The annual Leadership Awards are a way for Educate Maine to bring together educators from around the state who have been recognized as exemplary by their peers.

Soule is one of two state finalists for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) in elementary science, according to Shari Templeton, science & engineering specialist with the Maine Department of Education. Soule's Leadership Award at the Symposium on Friday will recognize her for that honor.

Soule said that being a Maine Presidential Award Finalist “truly reflects the work of my colleagues from Talbot as well as educators across the district. This award highlights the ways Portland Public Schools teachers' classrooms are tapping into student's curiosity and engaging students in relevant, purposeful, and inquiry-based learning in science instruction. It is exciting to share how, through these practices, all students develop critical thinking, the ability to work collaboratively, communication competencies, and knowledge. I am proud to represent the work of Portland Public Schools educators and the ways implementing integrated science instruction fosters intellectualism, joy, and activism for all students.”

The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. PAEMST is the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade educator may receive for outstanding science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science instruction in the United States.
